Latvia will hold presidential elections on Wednesday 12 March. This earlier date was agreed after a joint meeting between the coalition council and parliament's presidium on Monday.
The ruling coalition maintains it is vital to have the presidential mandate renewed as soon as possible so president Vaira Vike-Freiberga, if she succeeds again, can continue in power as Latvia enters the final crucial stage in its progress towards the EU and NATO.
