WTO gives EU May deadline for sugar reform

The World Trade Organisation (WTO) ruled on Friday (28 October) that the EU must overhaul its sugar export regime by 22 May 2006.

Brazil, Thailand and Australia have been pushing for the move, amid claims the EU's sugar export subsidies are against WTO rules.

The trade organisation originally issued a verdict last year, prompting an EU appeal which was rejected in April.
