German government plans new national gas reserves

The German government is considering spending €2 bn in building up national gas reserves to limit exposure to supply gaps. Economy minister Michael Glos told German daily FAZ the conflict in Georgia shows that “also on gas we must not make ourselves even more dependent on one side”.

EU lawmakers suggest boost to carbon offsetting

The EU should allow industry to offset a quarter of the greenhouse gas emissions cuts they are required to make under EU caps from 2013-2020, regardless of global agreement on a new climate change treaty, the European Parliament's industry committee suggests in a draft proposal seen by Reuters.

EU appeals against WTO banana ruling

The European Commission has launched an appeal against a WTO ruling against Europe in a dispute over bananas with the US and Ecuador. "The commission has devoted huge energy over recent months to finding a mutually agreed settlement to the long running dispute," Brussels said in a statement.

Brussels receives Italy's plans for Alitalia

The European Commission has confirmed receiving plans for Italy's flag carrier Alitalia. "We received the information from the Italian authorities yesterday in the form of a draft text for the privatisation plans for Alitalia," a spokesperson told reporters without commenting on the contents.

Warning over EU deadline for Caribbean trade pact

Caribbean countries failing to sign a trade pact with the EU by the October 31 deadline would lose preferential access for their products into the European market, a senior EU diplomat threatened, reports Jamaican media. The statement comes in reaction to doubts in several states about the pact.

Merkel named most powerful woman in the world

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been named most powerful woman in the world for 2008 by Forbes magazine, ahead of US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Senator Hillary Clintion or French economy minister Christine Lagarde. It is the third time in a row Ms Merkel has received the price.
